- IP Identification, Capture, and Protection
- Collaborate with university research teams to identify IP arising from research projects and assess its commercial potential.
- Evaluate invention disclosures arising from funded projects and thereafter, recommending decisions on filling, licensing or spinoff creation.
- Coordinate and oversee all patent, trademark, design, and other IP filling and registration processes through external IP agents, ensuring every IP asset aligns with SDEC's strategic objectives for commercialisation.
- Maintain comprehensive records for the IP portfolio, overseeing renewals and managing relationships with external IP agents to protect valuable assets.
- IP Strategy Development and Execution
- Develop and coordinate IP strategy across relevant units within the department ensuring alignment on IP protection and monetisation plans.
- Execute IP strategy for R&D outputs, accelerator initiatives, and product development projects, including licensing, partners, and direct commercialisation.
- Provide strategic input and date for IP negotiations - supporting deal teams on license terms, royalty structures, risk assessments, and due-diligence requirements.
- Maintain a digital portfolio database, renewal calendar, and budget.
- IP Valuation
- Conducting initial assessments, coordinating data collection, and supporting the financial analysis necessary to determine the value of IP assets.
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to understand the IP's practical applications, scalability, and appeal to various markets, contributing data for a more accurate determination of the potential market valie of IP and propose strategies for optimising returns.
- Coordinate with external IP valuation consultants and ensure alignment between external valuations and internal data to support accurate and coherent valuation results.
- Commercialisation and Market Readiness
- Support the Technology and Transfer unit to move products in development to market, including structuring IP terms to products moving through commercialisation pathways.
- Work closely with external stakeholders including universities, technology transfer offices, and industry partners to strengthen IP commercialisation pathways.
- Conduct or assist in market assessments and feasibility analysis for projects to identify commercial pathways, including licensing, partnerships, and startup formation.
- Shape term sheets, licensing agreements, spin-off strategies, and other IP exploitation activities, maximising returns and societal impact.
- IP Policy Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure that IP management are compliant with both organisational and regulatory IP policies, including patent, copyright, and trademark requirements.
- Identify and mitigate IP risks related to IP ownership and third-party usage, particularly within collaborative research agreements and joint ventures, working with legal counsel to resolve any IP-related disputes.
- Educate funded researchers and programme participants on IP policies, IP rights, and best practices to support innovation and commercialisation.
- IP Portfolio Management and Reporting
- Maintain and monitor the organisation's IP portfoliom tracking all active and pending IP assets.
- Collaborate with internal teams to prepare regular reports on IP portfolio performance and commercialisation outcomes, providing data-driven insights for senior management.
- Leverage valuation outcomes and portfolio-wide performance metrics to recommend whether to maintain, adjust or release individual IP assets, prioritise investment in high-potential projects, and implement improvements that maximise portfolio value.
- Stakeholder Engagement and External Relations
- Develop and implement a comprehensive engagement plan covering researchers, university research management centres, IP agents, licensing partners, and industry representatives to facilitate effective IP management and commercialisation.
- Establish dedicated communication channels with university research management centres and Principal Investigators to streamline intellectual property disclosures, ensuring timely decisions and compliance with SDEC policies.
- Convene periodic information sessions and clinics for researches, industry partners, government bodies, and relevant stakeholders to promote best practices in IP management.
- Represent SDEC in IP discussions with industry partners and university collaborators, fostering strong, trust-based relationships that support joint commercialisation efforts.
