Assistant Manager, Shariah Secretariat (GETB)

Reporting to the Head of Shariah, the incumbent has the responsibility to provide operational support for effective functioning of the Shariah committee.

Key responsibilities:

  • Performs shariah secretarial functions, which includes preparing minutes of meeting.

  • Schedules and coordinates matters relating to Shariah Committee meetings (at least 6 times a year) including preparation of meeting packs.

  • Disseminates Shariah decision/resolution to relevant stakeholders.

  • Assists Business Unit in seeking Shariah Committees endorsement/approval/notification/advice via email.

  • Conducts matters relating to appointment/reappointment of Shariah Committee members.

  • Delivers the Shariah Committees remuneration within an appropriate time.

  • Assists Shariah Committee members attending training.

  • Assists in effective and efficient implementation of the shariah governance structure.

  • Build relationship with the Shariah Committee.

  • Coordinates and obtain guidance from the Shariah Committee on operational business requirements.

  • Conducts Annual Assessment on the Effectiveness and Contribution of Shariah Committee Member

  • Conducts Fit and Proper Assessment of Shariah Committee Member as a Key Responsible Person (“KRP”)

  • Assists in ensuring products, services and processes within the organization are shariah compliant.

  • Assists research initiatives and activities.

  • Monitors the Shariah resolutions register.

  • Promotes/creates awareness &understanding of Takaful and Shariah to all stakeholders.

  • Takes accountability in considering business and regulatory compliance risks and takes appropriate steps to mitigate the risks.

  • Maintains awareness of industry trends on regulatory compliance, emerging threats and technologies in order to understand the risk and better safeguard the company.

  • Highlights any potential concerns /risks and proactively shares best risk management practices.

  • Must be a formal degree holder or higher in Shariah which includes study in Usul Fiqh (the origin of Islamic law) and Fiqh Muamalat (Islamic transaction/ commercial Law). Other professional qualification(s) is an added advantage.

  • Has 3 years of experiences in Takaful industry, or related industries.

  • Experience working with Shariah Committees and familiarity with Shariah governance frameworks as well as other relevant Policy Documents issued by BNM.

  • Strong knowledge of Shariah principles, Takaful operations and Islamic finance.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills for preparing minutes of meeting and conveying Shariah requirements/resolutions to various stakeholders.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with the Shariah Committee, management and other departments.

  • High level of integrity, takes accountability of work and good attitude over teamwork.

  • Takes initiative to improve current state of things and adaptable to embrace new changes.
